Balogun wasn't just a great thespian as I knew him to be watching him on screen, he was also a great father as I saw on a few occasions when I got to meet him in person. He always lit up the room with his jokes and stories. He would always ask if I was truly quiet or just shy, everyone was welcome in his home and I always left with learning a new proverb or phrase in Yoruba.
We thank God for a life well lived and I pray God's comfort for the entire family.

I got to discover Baba Oyewo in a way that I can never forget.
We were all in my father's living room sometimes in 2000 watching the film titled "Oleku" when one of our guests at that moment made us realize that he is the son of the elderly man in the movie.
Looking at the confident young man sitting with us then, I concluded that Baba Oyewo happens to be a man worthy of emulation and respect for raising that kind of son.
I eventually continued to look out for Baba in movies and he really earned my respect. He will be sorely missed.
I pray that the Lord will comfort all his family members.

A TRIBUTE TO THE LATE DR GABRIEL ADEKOLA OYEWO
(1946–2026)
We pay tribute to the life, legacy, and luminous memory of our dearly beloved cousin and father, Dr. Gabriel Adekola Oyewo, fondly known to everyone across the globe as Kola Oyewo. His passing has left a great void in our hearts, in our family, in Oba Ile Land, and in the wider community of art, academia, and culture that he so richly blessed.
Today, Oba Ile, Nollywood, academia, and indeed the world mourn the departure of a distinguished royal, an accomplished academic, a Nollywood icon, a celebrated playwright, and a steadfast custodian of Yoruba culture and heritage.
A Cousin, A Father, A Delight
Dr. Kola Oyewo was a cousin to my late father, Senior Bishop Dr Paul Oyegoke Abimbola, and the two shared an exceptionally close bond. I first met Uncle Kola in Meiran, Alagbado, Lagos State, around 1995, shortly after he had been cast in the acclaimed film Kòseégbé, in which he brilliantly portrayed a customs officer.
Even then, his amiability shone through; he was an absolute delight to converse with. With his characteristic warmth, he said to me, “Kunle, do you know we are cousins?” I replied, “I do not know, sir.” My late father was overjoyed to see him, and they spoke intimately that day, two kinsmen united by blood, mutual respect, and shared values.
I later met him again in Oba Ile during the funeral of the mother of Prince Gbenga Olayinka. He welcomed me most graciously, as he always did, with the same open-hearted courtesy. I last spoke with him on his birthday this past March, and his cheerful, vibrant spirit remained undimmed to the very end.
A Life of Excellence and Service
Dr. Kola Oyewo was a man of exceptional character, wisdom, and integrity. Throughout his life, he exemplified selfless service, deep humility, and an unwavering commitment to the welfare and progress of people.
An Immortal Legacy
As we grieve his passing, we also celebrate a life beautifully lived. Though we shall miss his physical presence deeply, we take solace that his legacy lives on. May his soul rest in perfect peace, and may God comfort his immediate and extended families, associates, colleagues, and community.

Though I never had the privilege of meeting Baba Oyewo in person, I have heard enough about him to know that he was a man whose life spoke volumes. Some people leave footprints wherever they go; Baba Oyewo left a legacy that continues to echo in the hearts and stories of those who knew him.
His life was such a lily! Lucky him!
From all that has been said about him, he was a man of wisdom, kindness, integrity, and genuine love for people. There are some people whose presence is so constant, so welcoming, and so generous that you never imagine a world without them. Dr. Kola Oyewo was one of those people.
To many, he was a celebrated Nollywood actor, a gifted storyteller, and a man whose talent illuminated every stage he stepped onto. But to me, he was much more than that. He was a father figure, a warm soul whose home was always open and whose kindness made everyone feel like family.
Some of my fondest memories are of Christmas gatherings at his home. Year after year, his house became a place of laughter, fellowship, good food, and joy. It was where friendships deepened, where families came together, and where everyone felt they belonged. His home was not just his home, it was home to all of us. Christmas will come again, but it will never quite feel the same without him welcoming us with that familiar warmth and generosity.

It is with a heavy heart that I pay this tribute to a loving and remarkable man, Baba Kola Oyewo, whose life was a blessing to many.
I first met him during my valedictory service at St. Anthony Catholic High School, Ilesa in 2008. On that memorable day, his words of advice still echo in my heart: "Remain focused and cherish education very well." Those simple but profound words became a guiding light and an encouragement to pursue life's goals with determination.
Years later, I had the privilege of meeting him again as a fellow member of the Sacred Heart Society in the Church. I often wondered how he was able to balance his profession with his spiritual responsibilities, but he proved beyond doubt that earthly duties need not hinder one's commitment to God. He served faithfully and wholeheartedly, never allowing his professional engagements to affect his spiritual assignments.
Baba Kola Oyewo truly portrayed what it means to be a soldier of Christ. He was dedicated, humble, committed, and always ready to guide and encourage others. He was not only a mentor but also a teacher of values, faith, and responsible living. His counsel on education, focus, family, and faith has left an enduring mark on many lives.
He was a good mentor, a promoter of happy homes, and a shining example of Christian living. Though his earthly work is now finished, we take solace in the belief that he has gone to receive his eternal reward.

You would greet daddy in English and he would look at you like you just spoke nonsense.

I met Papa in 1987 at St. Theresa's Minor Seminary, Oke-Are, Ibadan when he came to visit Wale as a student. I could also remember a day when I visited him at his Ile-Ife residence with a friend when he fed us with sumptuos delicacies and cold drinks.....

Uncle K stood out among his peers. My coming of age in Ile- Ife featured people in his circle. As someone grounded in his craft, he took a step forward by acquiring formal degrees in Theatre. Evolving from a practitioner to a scholar meant that he was a rounded and total Thespian. Losing men and women of his generation is with mixed feelings. Thankfully, his memory would be forever preserved in his artistic productions and his other anciliary.

I have heard so much about him in my early days of watching yoruba movies on television. I came in contact with Dr Wale Oyewo who was my senior in the seminary, who is a replica of him though shorter. Also, as the assistant parish priest of Ss peter and Paul lagere in year 2000. I met him fully. He was an ardent member of Association of sacred heart of jesus and immaculate heart of mary. Later when I was managing igboya church we now had better rapport. An encounter that really endeared him to me was the day he called me to be his lawyer when he had issue with aunty Dupe. Labaluyege was a man of courage, a real thespian to the core, even his life is like being on stage. A catholic to the core. Lover of his children and a loveable man. I cherished the way he took care of aunty Dupe grand mother. I know oba ile and oba oke catholic community will miss him. Adieu to the man you cannot but laugh your hearts out whenever you meet him. Grandchild
It’s hard to imagine life without grandpa especially Christmas holidays. Every year for as long as I can remember I have spent them with him. I don’t know how people celebrate Christmas outside of their grandparents house.
Moving on will be hard for me but I try to accept that he’s in a better place 🥺.
I remember when I was younger and spent some summer holidays with him and grandma 🕊️. There was one particular holiday where he addressed me in Yoruba and I was completely lost😅 the look of horror on his face was priceless you would think he had forgotten his lines at a crucial time 😂.
Immediately he bought note books for my little brother and I and made sure we only conversed in Yoruba throughout that break. My Yoruba isn’t perfect but it’s definitely as good as it is because of him.
I always imagined that when I graduate from uni he will be there with drummers and singers. Singing my oriki and making my head swell 🥹.
I love you grandpa and I wish I saw you more often to it to you time and time again.
