Some men hold great offices. Others transcend them and become institutions. Ambassador (Chief) Patrick Dele Cole belonged firmly to the latter. While the world knew him as a distinguished diplomat, historian, journalist, and politician, I came to appreciate the depth of his legacy through one of my dearest mentors — his son, Pastor (Arch.) Tonye Patrick Cole, affectionately called Papa. The integrity, leadership, spirit of service, and wisdom that defined Ambassador Cole's life continue to shine through the people he raised, mentored, and inspired. As we mourn the passing of an extraordinary Nigerian, elder statesman, and nation-builder, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Cole and extended families, and pray that God surrounds all who loved him with comfort, peace, and strength. I did not have the opportunity of meeting Late Ambassador & High Chief Dr. Patrick Dele Cole in person, but through his son Pastor Tonye Cole that I know and have interacted with over a decade, I can say that our late father was indeed a father in a million because he trained & brought up his son in the way of the Lord.
