Funeral Acknowledgement Wording for a Nigerian Burial Programme

Original funeral acknowledgement examples for Nigerian burial programmes, including general, personal and faith-sensitive wording.

The acknowledgement page is often written when everyone is tired and the designer is waiting. A short, accurate message will serve the family better than a page of formal praise copied from another booklet.

Use it to thank people for their care and practical support. It does not need to contain the full story of the illness, the funeral budget or a list of every visitor.

General wording for the family

The family of [full name] thanks everyone who has supported us through this loss. We are grateful for your visits, calls, messages, meals, practical help and presence today. Thank you to those who travelled and to those who could not be here but have kept in touch. Your kindness has helped us through difficult days.

This wording can sit on the final page of the burial programme. Adjust the pronouns and family name, and remove anything that does not describe what actually happened.

A version with specific thanks

We thank [congregation or community], [care team, with permission], our neighbours, colleagues and the funeral organising team for their support. We are also grateful to everyone who helped with transport, meals, photographs and preparations. To all who shared memories of [name], thank you for reminding us how many lives [he/she/they] touched in ordinary and lasting ways.

Check the names of organisations before printing. If you mention a hospital or care worker, make sure the wording reflects the family's wishes and does not disclose details they would prefer to keep private.

Faith wording should fit the family

A Christian family might end with:

We thank God for the life we shared with [name], and we are grateful for your prayers and care.

A Muslim family might choose:

We are grateful for your prayers, kindness and support. May Allah reward you for the care you have shown our family.

Ask the family or religious adviser to approve wording that expresses belief. There is no need to borrow a religious phrase because it appears in other programmes. A simple "With grateful hearts, the family" also works.

If the family wants to thank donors

Thank you to everyone who contributed towards the arrangements and supported the family in practical ways. Every act of help has been appreciated.

Avoid printing amounts, account details or a ranking of contributions. If somebody gave anonymously, keep their name out. A printed acknowledgement is a public message, not the place to settle the accounts.

A final check before printing

Read the acknowledgement alongside the biography, especially names and family references. Give one person responsibility for signing off both pages.

Check that:

  • Every named person and organisation is spelt correctly.

  • No private information has slipped into the wording.

  • Nobody is described as attending before their attendance is known.

  • Any faith wording has been approved.

  • The designer has the final version, not an earlier WhatsApp draft.

If you also need a spoken acknowledgement, the sample funeral vote of thanks can be adapted separately. A speech should sound like a person speaking; a printed page can be shorter and quieter.

There will probably be someone you remember after the booklet has gone to print. You can thank them personally later. The page does not have to carry every expression of gratitude the family will ever make.

You can keep more than the printed acknowledgement. Create a tribute on CelebrateThem to share the biography, photographs and memories your family wants to preserve.
